Shanxi Datong University located in Datong—a famous historic and cultural city, which is praises as the “coal capital” for its plentiful coal resources. The city is at the juncture of the three provinces of Shanxi, Hebei and Inner Mongolia, between the Inner and Outer Great Walls. It is 298km from Beijing to the east,250km from Huhhot to the north, 300km from Taiyuan to the south and 185km from the Holy Land of Buddhism—Mt. Wutai. With its total area of 14,152sq.km, there are 3.2 million populations, and 4 districts and 7 counties directly under its jurisdiction. Datong has more than 2,300 year city development history and 1,600 years capital history. It had played very important roles in different dynasties, such as the capital, the strategic spot and the provisional capital, etc. The profound history and plentiful relics make it become a perfect China’s cultural and historic city.

    Shanxi Datong University covers an area of 160 hectares, with a total floor space of 700，000 sq. meters. Through the construction and development for several decades, the University covers sciences, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, economics, management and art. Now Shanxi Datong University is making great efforts toward its goal of becoming a comprehensive local university with bright characteristics.

    Currently, Shanxi Datong University consists of 14 schools and 39 specialities, and covers 10 major disciplines. At present the total enrollment of over 31,000 full time students and teaching and administrative staff is 2314. Teaching staff with its total number as 1341. Among these, 112 are full professors and 432 associate professors, 487 have got a doctoral or master's degree, 1 has won the title of the National Key Member of Young Teachers, 5 play a leading role in the province-level studying branch, 57 won the title of the Provincial Key Member of Young Teachers, 5 are provincially famous teachers and 39 have been invited to be tutors for doctors or masters by key university. The university also employs 28 qualified full professors and scholars from other universities to be part-time teachers and honorary professors, among which 6 are members of Chinese Academy of Sciences or Engineering.   

    Shanxi Datong University is not only a teaching center, but also a scientific research base. At present, it has1 research centers of province important, 4 university-key laboratories, 16 university-graded research institutes, 12 teaching and research bases outer university, 1 attached hospital, 95 laboratories, 35 practical bases, 20 practical hospitals, 1 practical factory, 5,000 mu experimental field. In recent years, it has successively undertaken 20 state-level research programs and 109 province-level programs. 13 of these programs have won awards from provincial government and above. Now a total number of 3675 articles written by our teaching faculty have been published, and 128 of them have been collected by SCI, EI, ASTP, etc. Besides, there are totally 291 volumes of academic treatises, translated works and teaching materials produced by the university's teaching staff.

    The library has a collection of 1,810,000 volumes, 3,361 types of related academic periodicals and 12,000 sorts of electrical periodicals. In recent years, an increasing number of electronic and digital resources have been available in the library and also on the campus network. At present, there are thousands of computers contacting with internet, which provide students with advanced study manners and wide study space. 

    Shanxi Datong University has developed cooperative relationship with many overseas universities, research institutes and multinational companies in the forms of visiting, lecturing, student exchange, joint-research and setting up joint research centers, which help improve the quality of teaching and research at University. 2008, 39 specialities of Shanxi Datong University covering sciences, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, economics, management and art enrolling international visiting or advanced study students, Chinese language students, study tourism students, etc.
